How We Appraise

We strive to provide Asian art appraisal service of the highest quality at the lowest cost. To meet the different needs of our clients, we offer three levels of Appraisal to insure you that our art appraisal report will provide you with a realistic value estimate that will help you make an informed decision. We work closely with our clients in all stages of art consulting & appraisal. Our standard art consulting appraisal services follow five steps.

Step 1: Preliminary Assessment: We will listen carefully to your concerns and needs. Our aim is to prepare an art appraisal that meets your personal needs at the minimum cost. Initial discussion takes place via e-mail or phone correspondence. We usually ask you to supply us with high quality photos of the subject work in digital or printed versions before we proceed. After reviewing the photos, we will either recommned for or against an appraisal based on our expertise, experience and your needs. If your art work is of certain value and you decide to proceed, we will prepare for the appraisal assignment, starting with a proposal or an engagement letter.

Step 2: Engagement Letter/Proposal: Once you have decided on a specific appraisal level and give approval, a formal engagement letter will be sent to your for your signature. A signed copy of the engagement letter and a retainer are required to initiate our services. Regarding the payment, we prefer personal check or money order made out to WEI YANG ART, LLC, 274 Nassau Street, Princeton, NJ 08540, U.S.. Wire transfer is also acceptable (Please contact us for our bank information).

Step 3: Inspection Appointment: If an inspection is confirmed, please come to the appointment prepared and on time. After we examine the art work, firstly, we will discuss with you the nature of your art work and your options, either for appraisal or against appraisal. Secondly, if an appraisal is in order, we will interview you about the provenance and ask you some questions. Please make sure that you have all your photos and original documentation (invoice, receipt, provenance evidence, etc) with you for a review.

Step 4: Appraisal Research: If your art work merits an appraisal, we will research your art work in its historical and artistic contexts, study relevant markets where similar items of equal quality and age are often traded, rank it among its equals in quality, condition, age and visual appeal, analyze similarities and differences between your art work and its comparables before arriving at a value conclusion. The final appraisal report will be presented in the hope of sharing with the reader the logic followed, the facts examined, and the appraisal methodology adopted to support the value conclusion. It complies with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) adopted and promulgated by the Appraisal Standards Board of The Appraisal Foundation, and it conforms to the Code of Ethics of the American Society of Appraisers.

Step 5: Completion of Appraisal: After we inform you that your appraisal report is ready, we ask for the final payment. We will send you a hard copy of the appraisal report via USPS after the payment is cleared.

Customized Appraisal Services are available. If you have an Asian art object of very high quality, or have more than one art work to be appraised, an inspection of your art works is ecomonical and necessary. The inspection can take place in either our Princeton office or the location of the art objects in question. The fee structure is determined by the scope of work required to complete the appraisal assignment properly and the amount of information you request (Restricted Appraisal and Appraisal). We are happy to help you figure out which option of apppraisal suits your need. Our appraisal proposal outlines your appraisal need, type of appraisal, date and method of inspection, payment and completion schedules. With your approval, we request a retainer (50% of the estimated appraisal fee, a full payment of travel expenses and per diem if travel for inspection is necessary) to engage our services.

Understanding Your Art Work is the Key

The most important thing to remember is that no matter what you want to do with your art work, understanding what you have should be the top priority. You need to posses solid information and formulate an educated strategy in order to achieve your goals. Unfortunately, seeking advice or commissioning an art appraisal from a qualified expert is the most practical solution.

Today, selling an art work can be a big problem. Almost everybody finds it difficult to initiate a sale in the current art market. A lot of art owners have no clue what they have and where to start the sale.  Many people begin by contacting the famous auction houses, but very few owners receive a helpful response—sometimes no word at all. Others spend hours and hours on the internet without any concrete results. Many owners end the process of trying to sell the art object, since it costs them too much time, energy and emotion. Is it too hard to find a new home for my art work? Where can I find somebody who can guide me through the process? Is my art work worth the time and money I spend on an appraisal? Nobody wants to spend hard-earned money on an art object that is of very limited value or no value, but where to find the quality professional help you need? Do these frustrations sound familiar to you? In order to target these art market issues and provide Asian art owners with guidance and options, Asian art specialists of WEI YANG ART, are committed to offer solutions to your problems at the minimum cost.

WEI YANG ART is a professional Asian Art Consulting and Appraisal Firm located in Princeton, NJ. We provide our clients with the information they need, the services they desire, and the advice they deserve at the minimum cost.
